Clifford Thiel
This is the start of a series of image I'm am creating for my final major project at university it is a sort of cross from sports to social documentary. The aim of the project is to record the different clothing styles of different sports people and also what equipment they use. The whole project is going to be taken on medium format film and then scanned into my computer digitally where i will edit and then print. It is a cross over of styles of August Sander and Paul Floyd Blake with August simple styling and Floyd shots of sports people.
August Sander

I really like the work of August Sander the way he used a simple centred image in black and white as a form of documenting the social class's of the time. I like the fact that these simple images really show up any faults in your photographic technique they look easy to produce but his use of natural lighting is brilliant.

Paul Floyd Blake
Paul Floyd Blake is another good example of a cross over photographer creating sporting documentary images. These are simple images of young athletes but the end results are stunning the use of lighting and the way the models have been centre framed and looking at the camera are part of social documentary tradition.Carlos Serrao
Carlos Serrao is a social documentary photographer that's has spent some time documenting different sports people he images are high end portraits and at the same time documentary. This is a good example of how one image can be viewed in many different pathways these images are both sporting and documentary showing the close cross overs of the two genres.Sunday, 6 December 2009
Tim McKenna

Tim McKenna is a Australian surf photographer now living in Tahiti documenting the extreme nature of the surfing on the islands. His image of Larid Hamilton surfing one of the heaviest waves ever surf is most likely the most famous photograph of his generation having graced the covers of surf magazines and news papers the world over.
Regraded as one of the top modern surf photographers and at the cutting edge of the industry pushing the limits of what is possible in and out of the water. You can see the similarities between McKenna's images today and the image of the early greats like Warren Bolster and Ron Stoner. The layout's in the traditions of surf photography they invented and the angles they choose are very much still in use today.
Moraii press coverage
I recently covered the Moraii wave classic on Cornwall here's a link to some of the press coverage i got from the day.
